The first step of skincare is, understanding your specific skin type. Classification of skin types is essential because every skin type reacts differently to each skin product ingredient. For instance: Your skin is oily, and you use a too harsh anti-oil cleanser, it might lead to more oil production because your skin compensates for the lost oil. Just like that, every different skin type will respond differently to a particular formula.

So it is crucial to find your skin type so you can choose the correct options so you have a more radiant, smoother, and healthier complexion.

In any case, visiting a dermatologist to choose the correct product and deciding on a skincare regime can immensely. This applies doubly if your skin is too oily or too dry and especially too sensitive; it gets irritated, breaks out, or burns quickly.

Let us find out what type of skin you have and the best ways to care for it.

What are the different skin types?

The basic four skin types are normal, oily, dry, and sensitive. Let’s take a look at how you can determine your skin type and how to treat it.

  1. Normal/combination skin: People with normal or combination experience dryness, not prone to breakouts, and tend to have a well-moisturized t-zone. It is important to choose a moisturizer and sunscreen that is not too heavy but retains moisture where needed most. Those with gel-like texture will be better suited, and they should avoid over-moisturizing and stressing the skin. Exfoliating skin two days a week will also be helpful to maintain healthy skin.
  2. Dry skin: Dry skin tends to feel tight throughout the day; there might be noticeable flaking, and it has an overall rough texture. Dry skin appears in people due to genetics, season, hormones, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Avoiding the consumption of too much caffeine and drinking lots of water can make a massive difference in the skin's look and feel. You can improve the skin's texture and tone by regularly moisturizing, so it is soft and hydrated. Over washing or showering will remove any production of oil, so you should avoid that. Don’t drag the towel across your face; instead, pat your skin gently while drying yourself up. Also, use sunscreen to prevent your skin from getting dehydrated.
  3. Oily skin: People with oily skin tend to have a greasy appearance. The excessive oil on the skin is caused due to excess sebum production. Their skin is prone to acne breakouts; it leaves pores congested and clogged. Oily skin is less prone to wrinkles due to excess oil, making the skin supple. It would help if you avoided over-washing as it can remove necessary oils from your skin, which only makes it more oil-prone and sensitive.  Two times a day or after a physically exerting task like exercising as you’ve sweat too much is recommended. A gentle physical exfoliator will prevent sebum buildup in pores and balance the skin's oiliness and tone. The regular moisturizing cream is vital to keep skin hydrated and to avoid the overproduction of oil. Drinking water is, again, vital. An oil-based sunscreen and moisturizer are helpful for oily skin.
  4. Sensitive skin: People with sensitive skin tend to feel itchy and tight and have uneven texture on your body. It gets dry in winters and oily in summers. Sensitive skin has a bad reaction to even slightly unsuitable skincare. And sometimes tend to break out, feels irritating. There could be various reasons for sensitive skin, but allergies and low immunity are two of the top reasons. Age and genetics play a huge role, as well. It is best to consult a dermatologist in any case as a test, and fail to use different skincare products can lead to too much irritation. Generally, eating well, drinking lots of water, and avoiding over-washing can help. Also, use moisturizers and products with simple and fragrance less formula. Protect your skin from the correct moisturizers and sunscreen.
